The title of this article is wrong since I am prejudiced with komondor, but keep on reading further down.
A few months ago we achieved to rescue a few komondor puppies. At that time a nearly blind lady, Timi contacted us
that she wanted a komondor guide dog to go along with her older guide dog with. We were listening to her request in
disbelief. We did not think it all would end well for them but we did not wanted to be prejudiced and wanted to give it a chance.
Timi, who is seriously handicapped with her vision came to us so self confident that we just could not believe it.
Even that Timi is handicapped in her vision she lives a full and perfect life with her family and her other guide dog.
She came to us because she wanted a komondor for a long time already. We were not sure in that a komondor would be able to serve as a blind guide dog at all.
For us it was unheard of using a komondor for guide dog for this purpose. We had doubts that it would work out well, but we gave it a chance.
It is well known that there are great differences amongst same
breed of dogs, so we have tried to pick the calmest and most attentive dog. Picking the dog was easy since the right puppy did already choose the new owner, exactly the one that we would have picked ourselves for Timi.
All the readers who pay attention to our web page and postings know already a few nice stories from Timi and Gréti, her guide komondor. But now we have gotten a letter from Timi that made us so very very proud. How can a komondor lead a blind person? Gréti gave us the answer to that question. Here is the letter that we got:
"I will tell you how the komondor specialized in leading her blind owner, maybe we should make a movie of this so everyone could see it. When I leave the house and walk to the fire wood storage I carry the empty bucket in my wright hand to bring the wood back in with. Gréti knows even without me telling her so that she comes on my left side. If my older guide dog, Mázli happenes to be there in the way she gently and firmly pushes the other dog out of the way and just as gently and securily holds my left hand with her teeth and guiding me back never causing me any pain or harm. This is the best way I can describe the komondor guidance. So far none of my blind guide dogs done such a great job, I don't even know how the komondor figured this out on her own."
Keep on Gréti and Timi!
